PAT Testing Information

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT testing)

It is generally regarded that all businesses should have Portable Appliance Testing (Pat Testing) undertaken on a regular basis by qualified engineers, as it acknowledged as being the best way of meeting the electrical regulations that exist to protect your employees, customers and your business.

Failure to comply with the Electrical Regulations may constitute a criminal offence under the Consumer Protection Act 1987 which carries a maximum penalty, on conviction, of a £5,000 fine and/or 6 months imprisonment.

All portable electrical equipment is subject to getting damaged during use, and this damage could render the equipment dangerous to the user. Without a regular programme of testing and inspection, you have not taken reasonable steps to ensure the safety of users.

What appliances need PAT testing?

PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is required for any electrical item that is mains powered by a plug, like the examples below:

Hand held appliances - irons, hairdryers, drills etc

Portable appliances - vacuum cleaners, toasters, food mixers, etc

IT equipment - computers, monitors, printers, copiers and IEC leads, etc

Moveable equipment - electric fires, air conditioning units, etc

Stationery equipment - fridges, heaters, dishwahers, etc

How often do they require testing?

Tests and inspections should be made at reasonable and regular intervals, bearing in mind the rate of use of both portable and fixed appliances. However, it is recommended, as Health and Safety Best Practice, to have this work carried out on an annual basis (dependent on type and use).

Whatever the size of your company CK Compliance can meet you PAT testing requirements.
